WANTED: Partner in Clean

"Hello, my name is Susan, and I am a slob."

With 8 years of disability, countless roommates having moved in and out, fiber stuff in every available space, and packrat, dysfunctionally disorganized parents who didn't teach me how to be anything else, I am a mess, and my house shows it.

When I was 12, I decided to stop being violent when my pricipal said 'knock it off, or its going on your transcript.'

When I was about 23, I decided to stop being late when my best friend admitted to fudging about what time events started so I would show up on time.

So, here I am, 33 years old, and my objective for this decade is to stop being a slob. Not as easy to start in on cold turkey as the other two were, but I am older, so maybe it *should* get more challenging.

I've read every organizing book out there, and it *has* helped, but I have a long way to go. As of last week, I now make my bed every morning when I get out of it. Since I often go back for a nap or to read, it never seemed worth it, but now I just pull it together (about 10 seconds worth of work) and it looks much better all day long. Plus, since that is where I fold laundry, I am getting that chore done much more regularly now too.

My studio is VERY organized, as are my books. My stuff is actually pretty well organized, but it still 'overflows'. I just read the book "How not to be a Messy" by Sandra Felton, and, if you can get around the constant Christian quotes, it is a really useful book. I had never before looked at the psychological reasons why I keep so much stuff.

My mother grew up in WW2 England, with ration books and all that. She still keeps every piece of string, every rubber band, and hordes brown paper like she may never see it again. Likewise, my dad grew up in depression era Boston, and does much the same, with old tools especially.

The running gag in their house is that if they were illiterate their home would be immaculate: magazines, books, business records going back to the 60's - you name it. Plus, Dad has to keep all of his unread newspapers (in brown paper bags) until he has a chance to go through them and take cuttings. He needs a photocopy of every document conceivably related to business or money before it leaves his posession. Needless to say, their home is a MAJOR fire trap.

So, growing up with all that, I do what I learned (to some extent!) Plus, I keep all of my books - especially the heavy tomes from my college days - as a way of proving that I am a bright, educated person. Without books on neuroscience lying around the house, how is anyone ever going to know that I am a scientist!?!?!?

Yeah, I have issues. I think the same applies with some of my fiber stuff. For years, I figured that no one would take my work seriously, unless it looked like I had a serious amount of stuff. As a result, I have two HUGE bags of dyed locks crammed into my linen cupboard, and no access to a drum carder to actually be able to use it!

I have an entire shelf of pregnancy and baby books (not including magazines!), which I use like a fetish to hope that I will one day actually get to use them!!! Pretty stupid waste of money, too, since they pretty much all say the same thing...

SO - My husband is going along with my new resolve (kind of like the smoker who quits every week) to make this place habitable!!! If for NO other reason, than that when I DO actually have a child, my home in its current condition would take a dumpster to babyproof.

But, in order to make this resolve less of a flash in the pan prospect, I thought I'd ask if any other quilters out there (since so much of my anarchy is studio stuff) might want to join me as my Partners in Clean! We can cheer each other on, keep the momentum going, and chat about quilt art while we are at it!

Any takers????????????

Count me in. I used to be able to ignore my clutter, but I can't anymore. I'm going to start by getting more storage bins for my stash. Will keep you posted.

Excellent! I'm so glad that you both want to join me! Do you have an email addy that we can use Kaylin, or would you prefer to correspond this way?

I went out last weekend to get another storage bin for my studio (more to fill a space that seems to gather clutter, rather than to store anything in particular, but I know I would use it!) but they didn't have any that match the ones I have, and one of the points of this is to make it easier on my eyes, not more cacophanous!!

Ah well. Hopefully I'll find one that matches with all the back-to-school sales happening soon...

I've been "sort of" working on this all week. I set a timer to make myself quit reading or sewing or ...reading blogs. Then set it again for varying amounts of time on chores.

Not sure how serious I am yet. But there is always hope. Tried Flylady a couple of years ago, and it helped, but hated the emails.

Ok Teri - you cleaned your microwave and oven door *on the same day*? Without having company that same night????

I think you might be like the case of a skinny chick walking into my belly dancing class a few years ago and being told by the teacher that she *had* no belly, since she was too skinny, and to get out! ;)

We won't kick you out, but I honestly don't think that you sound like a serious offender, at least not on THAT day!

Today I organized bookcases, and before I leave for Boston on Sat AM, I WILL have paid all of my bills AND have deposited funding to cover said bills into my checking account. Any assistance in holding me to this would be greatly appreciated!!!

Enjoy!

HA! You should see the REST of the house! I asked my DH what he thought of the cleaning job...he just looked around at all that hadn't been cleaned yet....he DID pull the fridge out so we could vacuum the coils and I could wash the sides.....

I'm saving the rest of the countertops for tomorrow....I gotta figure out what to do with all my dyeing stuff.

oh, me, me, me! Since moving up here I have been REALLY trying - but I have this VORACIOUS need to read... and I HATE throwing things out, especially magazines, since there might be something useful in there one day...This past week I have been very good and got rid of TWELVE BOXES of old national geographics, and I only went through half of one box tearing out pictures before I realised I just had to let them go. I need help and encouragement tooooo!! Thanks for the idea of banding together for this!

Throw out Nat'l Geographics? That is just CRIMINAL!!!! I only just started throwing out TIME mag, for heaven's sake. NG is one of my best resources, and with that handy index down the side of every volume, how can you pass it up?!?!?!

Ah well. To each their own clutter...

Nice to have you with us, Caitlin!

Well, we leave shortly, and the bills aren't paid. They are sorted, and the monies deposited (that thanks to DH), but checks are not yet written...

I had a bad fever most of yesterday and last night, and this weird stiffness in my hands and feet is getting annoying, so I'm cutting myself a little slack. Not much, and not an excuse, just a little fudge factor. All regular bills will go out in Monday's post.

BTW - I'm thinking, that since we have so many folks interested, in doing a weekly challenge for us - that we each pick some new habit or action that we want to accomplish in the coming week, and hopefully maintain the weeks to come. For example, I have been making my bed every morning for the last week plus (a new thing for me, believe it or not) and am trying to make it a habit that I stick with.

What do you think? I was thinking that we could do a habit one week, and an action the next, and maybe do them on a theme - taxes, automotive, exercise, fridge, etc. Suggestions are most welcome! I'll post this next week's theme and habit on Monday, so get your ideas in before then!!!
